The right scent at the right time: Hynt research heads to Sleep Europe 2026

News Research

Scent has a remarkable ability to influence how we feel and respond – from helping us relax and unwind to supporting deeper, more restorative sleep. But not everyone responds to scent in the same way. And when it comes to sleep, what scent is delivered is only part of the story. When it is delivered matters too.

That is where technology opens up exciting new possibilities.

At Hynt, we are developing technology that goes beyond simply releasing a scent at bedtime. By combining physiological sensing with precise, controlled scent delivery, our technology is designed to enable personalised scent interventions at the moments they are needed – responding to the individual and their changing physiological state throughout the night.

The ambition is simple but powerful: rather than just tracking sleep, can technology actively support it in a personalised, non-invasive way?

Putting personalised scent to the test

Building the scientific evidence behind this approach is fundamental to what we do at Hynt.

We are therefore delighted to share that our latest research, “Personalised olfactory stimulation during sleep modulates slow-wave activity during non-rapid eye movement sleep,” has been accepted for poster presentation at Sleep Europe 2026, the 28th Congress of the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS).

Conducted in collaboration with the Surrey Sleep Research Centre at the University of Surrey, the study investigated personalised olfactory stimulation during sleep and its effects on slow-wave activity during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.

The work adds to the growing scientific evidence behind Hynt’s vision: harnessing the power of scent through technology that can deliver the right intervention, for the right person, at the right time.

See you at Sleep Europe 2026

We are excited to share these insights with the international sleep research community at Sleep Europe 2026 in Maastricht, the Netherlands, from 20 to 23 October 2026.

The work will be presented by Dr Valeria Jaramillo and is the result of a close collaboration between Hynt and the Surrey Sleep Research Centre, led by Dr Ciro della Monica, with Marta Messina Pineda, Jasmine Ramble, Prof Hana Hassanin and Prof Derk-Jan Dijk, alongside the Hynt team: Dr Elena Calzolari, Dr Richard Hopper, Devarsh Patel, Dr Christopher Dawes, Dr Andreas Keller, Prof Marianna Obrist and Dr Emanuela Maggioni.

If you are attending Sleep Europe, come and meet the Hynt team. We look forward to exchanging ideas with researchers, clinicians and collaborators working to advance the science – and future – of sleep.
